Red Mortar Sand

Our Red Mortar Sand is called that for its slight orange-red coloring. It is just as often referred to as Mortar Sand, Builder’s Sand or Mason’s Sand. It’s a naturally eroded sand dug from huge quarry deposits, so the sand particles are somewhat rounded. People use our Red Mortar Sand for a variety of building and landscaping ends, but overwhelmingly it is used to make mortar. Our sand produces a consistent, neutral gray colored mortar that blends unobtrusively with brickwork, cinderblock, flagstones or pavers.

Because our Red Mortar Sand is washed and screened multiple times, it has no dust content. This makes it safe for sandboxes and playgrounds. Some people prefer it to our Concrete Sand for filling between pavers for their garden or patio. Others like to place a layer of sand under decorative mulch to keep it above the soil longer. And here’s a gardening tip — an inch or two of mortar sand makes a much better garden spot for all those Mediterranean herbs everyone loves. They always prefer a well drained, sandy soil.
